Xbox Storage Expansion Card not recognised

Check Profile & system → Settings → System → Storage first. If the card isn’t listed, Microsoft’s steps are short.

Storage Expansion Card not recognised

Symptoms
The Storage Expansion Card isn't listed under Settings → System → Storage, or the console shows a blank screen on start-up with the card attached.
Documented cause
The card is not seated firmly, or it needs reinserting after a restart.[1]
  1. Reseat the card. Remove the card, wait 30 seconds, then insert it firmly into the Storage expansion slot on the back.[1]
  2. Restart with the card removed. If it still doesn't appear after 30 seconds, remove the card, restart the console, then insert the card again.[1]
  3. Blank screen at start-up. Remove the card and other peripherals such as USB drives and charging stations, then start the console.[1]

On a new console, Microsoft says to install the first system update before connecting a card at all.

A card moved from another Series X|S console works, but games on it need the owner to sign in, or the game disc, to play.
