4K at 120 Hz on Xbox Series X: requirements and setup
4K at 120 Hz needs everything in the chain to support HDMI 2.1: an Xbox Series X, a TV with HDMI 2.1, and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. If one of them doesn’t, the console won’t offer the combination.
Xbox Series X not offering 4K at 120 Hz
- Check the chain supports HDMI 2.1. 4K at 120 Hz needs an Xbox Series X, a TV with HDMI 2.1 and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.[1]
- Set resolution and refresh rate. Profile & system → Settings → General → TV & display options: Resolution 4K UHD, Refresh rate 120 Hz.[1]
- AV receiver in the chain. Use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that came with the console. If it still fails, contact the receiver's manufacturer.[1]
- 120 Hz at a lower resolution. On a Series S or a TV without HDMI 2.1, set Refresh rate to 120 Hz; the console lowers the resolution to match.[1]
Other display settings
The same TV & display options screen covers auto low-latency mode (switches the TV to its game mode), variable refresh rate, HDR10 and Dolby Vision for video apps. The console detects and applies many of these during first setup.
