Valve says the Steam Machine has over six times the horsepower of a Steam Deck. It marks the specifications as subject to change ahead of availability, and it doesn’t publish a power-consumption figure.
Displays
DisplayPort 1.4 goes up to 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. HDMI 2.0 goes up to 4K at 120 Hz and supports CEC. Several displays can be connected, but Gaming Mode only uses one at a time, and HDMI takes priority when it’s connected. Games default to 1080p, the resolution Valve uses for Steam Machine Verified testing. It can be changed globally or per game.
With HDMI CEC enabled on the TV and “Turn on TV when resuming from sleep” switched on under Settings → Power → HDMI CEC, the TV turns on when the Machine wakes. A Steam Controller, over the built-in adapter or a Puck, or a Bluetooth controller can wake the Machine.
USB and storage
The two front USB-A ports are USB 3.2 Gen 1, and the two rear USB-A ports are USB 2.0. The rear USB-C port has its own bus, so it’s the best choice when several USB devices compete for bandwidth.
The microSD slot is on the front. A card that already holds a Steam Deck library works in the Machine as it is, and the installed games play without extra steps.
Placement and care
Valve advises against using the Machine in an enclosed space. In a cabinet, leave a few inches on all sides and at least one open panel, and don’t stand it on carpet. When cleaning the fans with a vacuum or compressed air, hold the blades still so they can’t spin too fast and get damaged.
To roll back or reinstall SteamOS, hold the power button from off until the indicator flashes white, then press it again when the LED shows yellow. Valve’s recovery article has the details.
