Steam Frame specifications

Valve describes Steam Frame as streaming-first: it streams games, VR and non-VR, from a PC over the included Wi-Fi 6E adapter. It also runs games stand-alone, since it’s a SteamOS PC on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. A Steam Frame Standalone Verified program marks which games work without a PC.

Streaming and eye tracking

Two interior cameras track the eyes for foveated streaming. The headset’s dual Wi-Fi 7 radios can hold a normal 5 GHz connection and a 6 GHz VR stream at the same time. Four outward-facing monochrome cameras handle headset and controller tracking and provide monochrome passthrough, with IR illuminators for dark rooms.

Fit

Valve gives an IPD range of 60–70 mm and fits glasses up to 140 mm wide. The core module (185 g) separates from the headstrap, which holds the battery and speakers and weighs 245 g. Together they weigh 440 g.

Controllers

Each Steam Frame controller runs on one replaceable AA battery, rated at about 40 hours. They have full 6-DOF tracking, TMR thumbsticks and capacitive finger tracking. The Steam Controller also works with the Frame, with shorter battery life during tracked play.

Availability

At the time of writing, Valve sells Steam Frame through reservation lists per model (256 GB and 1 TB) and region: North America, UK/EU and Australia. The lists were randomised on 17 September and purchase emails started on 18 September. Komodo distributes in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and South Korea follows later. Each headset can redeem one copy of Half-Life: Alyx in Settings, but not if the account already owns it.

Limitation Valve marks the specifications as subject to change ahead of availability.

To recover SteamOS on the Frame, hold the AUX button while powering on until the SteamOS menu appears.
