Steam Deck won’t turn on or is frozen
A flashing power LED after you press the button means the battery is empty. A Deck that has never been switched on may also still be in shipping mode. LCD models leave the factory that way and need the power supply connected once before they start.
Steam Deck won't turn on or respond
- Charge with the included power supply. Plug the supplied PSU directly into the Deck, check the LED is lit, and charge for at least 15 minutes before powering on. LCD units ship in battery-saving mode and need to be plugged in before the first start.[1]
- Force a restart. Hold the power button for 4 seconds (7 on OLED). If it stays unresponsive, hold it for a full 10 seconds.[1]
- Boot through the BIOS menu. If the Deck charges but the power button does nothing, hold Volume + while powering on and choose Continue to boot.[1]
- Roll back or reset SteamOS. If it powers on but SteamOS won't load, use the recovery menu to roll back to the previous OS version (keeps games and saves), erase user data, or re-image.[2]
Normal behaviour that looks like a fault
- The power LED dims after 3–5 seconds on LCD and about 15 seconds on OLED.
- After long periods on the charger, the Deck may show less than 100%. Valve lets the battery discharge slightly on purpose to protect long-term battery health.
- The Deck charges over USB Power Delivery and doesn’t support Fast Charging or Quick Charge.
Recovery options
The recovery menu opens if you hold the “…” button while powering on from fully off. Valve recommends having the Deck plugged in. “Previous B” rolls back to the last working SteamOS version and keeps games and saves. The menu can also erase user data. If the Deck still boots into Steam, Settings → System → Factory Reset clears everything and reinstalls Steam.
Model differences: Steam Deck OLED vs LCD.
Charger requirements for a replacement: USB-C chargers for Switch 2 and handhelds.
