Steam Deck external display not working when docked
When a display connects correctly in Gaming Mode, the Deck’s own screen goes black. That’s expected. If the Deck’s screen stays on, the display isn’t being detected. If the Deck goes black but the TV shows nothing, the problem is the link between dock and display.
Steam Deck external display blank when docked
- Check input and cable type. Select the display input that matches the cable. DisplayPort-to-HDMI needs an active adapter; passive ones aren't supported.[1]
- Use External Display Safe Mode. Unplug the Deck from the dock, set 'External display safe mode' to On in the Display menu, then reconnect. The Deck picks a low resolution and refresh rate.[1]
- Update the dock's firmware. With the PSU and Deck plugged into the dock, restart the Deck, unplug both, wait 10 seconds and reconnect; this should start the update.[1]
- Lower resolution or refresh rate. Override them in Steam → Display. If a lower mode works, the dock, cable or display doesn't support the one you set.[1]
Cables and display modes
A cable that works in one setup can fail in another, because the data rate depends on resolution, refresh rate, colour depth, HDR and compression. Many TVs also limit some HDMI inputs to 30 Hz at 4K. Valve’s own dock outputs up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz.
| Display outputs | DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0; up to 4K 60 Hz or 1440p 120 Hz; FreeSync (VRR)[2] |
|---|---|
| Multi-monitor (MST) | Supported; currently needs both HDMI and DisplayPort in use[2] |
If the picture is cropped or doesn’t fill the screen, turn off “Automatically Scale User Interface” under Steam → Display and adjust the slider, or look for an overscan setting on the TV.
Valve suggests connecting another USB-C device with video output, such as a laptop or phone, to the same dock to narrow down where the problem is.
