Processor and memory
The Ally X uses the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme: 8 cores and 16 threads at up to 5.0 GHz, plus an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS. It has 24 GB of LPDDR5X. The Ally has a Ryzen Z2 A with 4 cores and 8 threads at up to 3.8 GHz, and 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400. In both, the memory is soldered on board.
Ports
Only the Ally X has a USB4 port. It’s Thunderbolt 4 compliant with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, alongside a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. The Ally has two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. Both of those also carry DisplayPort and power delivery, so either model can drive an external display.
Battery and charger
The Ally X has an 80 Wh battery and the Ally 60 Wh. Both use a 65 W USB-C charger, but ASUS says whether one is included varies by country, region and model.
Xbox mode
Both boot into Windows 11. Xbox mode (Microsoft’s controller-first full-screen launcher, formerly the “full screen experience”) can start automatically at sign-in on handhelds. It needs Windows 11 24H2 or later and is only available in supported markets. With “Enter Xbox mode on startup” turned on, Windows limits background processes, and startup apps wait until you first switch to the desktop. Win + F11 leaves Xbox mode.
Storage upgrades
Both take a full-size M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. ASUS’s procedure is in ROG Xbox Ally SSD upgrade.
Against other handhelds: Handheld gaming PC comparison.
