If a PS5 won’t read discs after you attach the detachable disc drive, the usual causes are a drive that hasn’t been paired online yet or a console it doesn’t fit: it only works with the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups.

Symptoms
Console does not read discs after the detachable drive was fitted.
Documented cause
The drive has to be paired online at first setup and only fits CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 consoles.[1]
  1. Check the console model. The drive only works with CFI-2000 (Slim) and CFI-7000 (Pro) consoles. The original Digital Edition (CFI-1000/1100/1200) cannot use it.[1]
  2. Connect the console to the internet. The first pairing between drive and console needs an internet connection.[1]
  3. Reseat the drive. With the console off and unplugged, remove the circle cover, align the drive's clips with the two holes marked with an upside-down triangle and push until it clicks.[1]
