Which PS5 consoles work with the detachable disc drive?
The detachable disc drive works only with consoles from the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000/1100/1200) can’t use it.

Setup requirement
The drive pairs with the console the first time it’s connected, and this needs an internet connection.
What it reads
| Playable discs | PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray, supported PS4 Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD±R/RW[3] |
|---|---|
| Read speed (BD-ROM 66/100 GB) | ~10× CAV[3] |
| Read speed (DVD) | ~3.2× CLV[3] |
PS4 game discs work in supported titles. PS3 discs are not supported on any PS5.
Fitting the drive
- Turn the console off from the control center (Power > Turn Off PS5), unplug it and let it cool.
- Place it bottom-up with the front facing you and remove the short horizontal feet.
- Lift off the circle cover.
- Align the drive’s clips with the two holes marked with an upside-down triangle and push until it clicks.
- Attach the circle cover and the long feet supplied with the drive, then reconnect the console.
Keep the original cover and short feet: you need them if you use the console without the drive.
