Controllers

The DualShock 4 and officially licensed third-party PS4 gamepads work on PS5 with supported PS4 games. They can’t be used in PS5 games, and the DualShock 4 is not compatible with PS VR2 games.

How to connect a PS4 controller to a PS5

  1. Turn the PS5 on.
  2. Connect the DualShock 4 to the console with a USB cable.
  3. Press the PS button. The light bar blinks, then the player indicator lights up.

Once it has enough charge, unplug the cable and use it wirelessly. A DualShock 4 pairs with only one console at a time, so moving it back to a PS4 means pairing it there again the same way.

On PS5, the DualShock 4’s SHARE button opens the create menu (single press), takes a screenshot (press and hold) or saves a recent gameplay clip (double press). The PS4 share menu itself isn’t available.

Specialty controllers and headsets

According to Sony:

  • officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games;
  • the Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, and third-party headsets connected over USB or the 3.5 mm jack, work on PS5. The PS4 headset companion app is not compatible.
Limitation Sony notes that not all licensed or third-party accessories work on PS5 and recommends checking with the accessory’s manufacturer for specific products and games.

PS VR (the PS4 headset)

Supported PS VR games run on PS5, but the setup needs:

  1. the PS VR headset;
  2. the PlayStation Camera for PS4 (model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2);
  3. the PlayStation Camera adaptor, which connects the PS4 camera to a USB-A port on the PS5;
  4. a DualShock 4 (recommended by Sony), or PS Move / PS VR aim controllers where the game requires them.

The PS5 HD Camera can’t replace the PS4 camera for PS VR tracking.

Caution Sony says that as of 26 November 2024, or until supplies last, the PlayStation Camera adaptor is no longer available. Without it, PS VR can’t be used on PS5.

PS VR games are not playable on PS VR2, and PS VR2 does not work on PS4. See PS VR2 specifications.

Other features that don’t carry over

  • PS4 Second Screen and game companion apps aren’t supported on PS5.
  • PS3 discs aren’t supported, including PS4 digital games that need the PS3 disc from the upgrade program.
